The 23rd conference and annual general meeting of the society of Nigeria Theatre Artists may have come and gone but the indelible mark the conference has deposited as apparently and practically attested to by delegates, participants invited dignitaries and even the host environment will continue to remain in the send of time.

                The choice of Nasarawa State University as the venue of the conference was a decision that become tantamount to the success of the occasion. The organization out by the local organizing committee headed by Dr. Christopher O. Iyimoga was a sterlin organization from the day one to the last day of the conference. Thought it had it concomitant hatches like any other occasion, the committee was alive to surmount all challenges.

                SONTA under the visionary leadership of  Professor Emmanuel Samu Dandaura has always been in the limelight to re-orientate and sensitize Nigerians on their true cultural heritage and their image. The theme of this year’s conference “Culture and re-Imaging Nigeria” was a topic that could be said to be ripe to occasion because of it keys to the federal government re-branding campaign which is to place the country in its rightful place in the committee of Nations.

It was cultural and theatrical galore as different cultural troups and theatre arts students put on immaculate performances to entertain the audience. The beauty of the occasion was indeed colourful as our culture was shown to us. It was a thrilling and scintillating episodes of events.

Friends, well wishers and members of SONTA from within and without rallied around the society to see to the success of event. SONTA has always been in the fore front of encouraging diligence, dedication, commitment and hardworking. This evidence in its annual and periodical mentorious awards to members whose outstanding contributions see no measure. This year the presidents of the Society and others members were duly recognized and awarded with the with title of “fellow of SONTA” and the other category of award which is “Life time achievement award”.

Voices from delegates and participants on their experience gave a pass mark to the organizers and also SONTA Exco. The encomiums were enough to say kudos to the organizers of the conference.

The peaceful serenity of Nasarawa State University provided a warmly hospitality to delegates and participants. The Nasarawa state governor, Alhaji (Dr.) Aliyu Akwe Doma who is one of the trustees of the society and the stat executive council members also deserve special mention as their supports both in cash and in kind cannot be quantify in measure the representatives of the ministers of information and communication and that of culture and National Orientation made the occasion livelier and eventful.

The height and peak of the conference was recorded during the plenary section where members of SONTA across the country did some academic challenges of paper presentations. Debatable topical and burring current issues in the area of culture and theatrical work were logically argued before colleagues.

One of the opportunities that abound delegates and participants including the host community was the book fair where many books written by famous scholars in the area of cultural and theatre discipline were sold at affordable prices.

SONTA 2010 organizers of 23rd conference and annual general meeting deserve an appraisal because even in the area of recepton they were there. Delegates, participants and invited dignitaries were treated to a sumptuous African dish. Sovenairs to participants and vote of thanks and appreciation to all that have contributed to the success of the conference marked the end of the four day event.

SONTA was indeed an opportunity that reminded us of our cultural heritage and lineage that modernization wants to take away from us.
