Dr. Josephine Ebiuwa Abbe is a Senior Lecturer and teaches Dance in the Department of Theatre Arts and Mass Communication, University of Benin, Benin City. She obtained her B.A. (1999) and M.A. (2004) degrees in Theatre Arts from the University of Benin, Benin City, Nigeria, with focus on Dance Studies. She has a PhD (2014) in Performance Studies (African Dance) from the Institute of African Studies, University of Ibadan, Nigeria.
She is a dance scholar in Nigeria, who has produced a lot of dance students and Choreographers. She has, to her credit, published books, chapters in books, and several journal articles that treat issues in African Dance Studies. She has also created and choreographed several dances. Her dance libretto, “Nightmare” won the 2017 SONTA-Chris Iyimoga Prize for Best Dance Libretto.
Dr. Josephine Abbe is a member of several learned societies. She is the current Secretary General of Association of Dance Scholars and Practitioners of Nigeria (ADSPON). She is also a member of the African Theatre Association (AfTA), Pan-African Society for Musical Arts Education (PASMAE) West Africa, and Arts Council of the African Studies Association (ACASA). A member of Public Bodies, such as, Rotary Club of Benin Kings Square, Benin Traditional Dance Foundation, and Castle of Legends Initiative, she is happily married with children.
